The Bangkokian Museum is a small, free local museum set in a shady garden off Soi Charoen Krung 43 in Bang Rak. It preserves a family compound of old wooden houses, including a two-storey teak home built in 1937 and furnished as it was in the years around the Second World War, a former doctor's clinic and an old kitchen. Visitors come for the everyday objects: radios, a gramophone, kitchenware, photographs and documents about the Bang Rak community, and staff often show people around. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 16:00, closed Monday; some older guides list Wednesday to Sunday, so check before going. Take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Si Phraya or Oriental pier and walk, or allow about 25 minutes on foot from BTS Saphan Taksin. Entry is free and donations are welcome.
Rating from public reviews
Each part combines public reviews from several sites (77 reviews). Not our own visit.
Visitors love the nostalgic, lived-in feel of the old wooden houses and the warm, knowledgeable caretakers who show them around.
It is small and a little hard to find, and the limited opening days have caught some visitors out.
