Som Tam Jay So is a no-frills Isaan (northeastern Thai) eatery on Soi Phiphat 2, a quiet lane off Soi Convent in Silom. It has fed the Silom lunch crowd for well over a decade, with extra tables set out along the lane. The charcoal grill is the draw: marinated chicken wings, often the first thing to sell out, plus grilled chicken, pork neck and lemongrass-stuffed catfish, eaten with sticky rice and fiery papaya salads such as tam pa with fermented fish sauce. Orders are ticked on a paper check-box sheet, there is no air-conditioning, and weekday lunch brings a crush of office workers, so come before noon or after about 13:30. Dishes are cheap. It opens Monday to Saturday from 11:00 to 17:30. BTS Chong Nonsi and Sala Daeng are each a 5 to 10 minute walk.

Smoky charcoal-grilled wings and pork neck with properly fiery, funky papaya salads, all at street-level prices.
It is hot, cramped and hectic at weekday lunch, there is little English help, and the grilled favourites can sell out early.
