Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, known to Thais as Wat Khaek, is the oldest Hindu temple in Bangkok, built in 1879 by Vaithi Padayatchi, a Tamil immigrant, and still the main Tamil Hindu temple in Thailand. Its South Indian gopura, 6 metres high and crowded with carved deities, rises over the corner of Silom and Pan roads, where stalls sell marigold garlands and coconuts; inside are shrines to Mariamman, Ganesh, Kartik, Shiva, Vishnu and other gods, and the temple draws Thai Buddhist and Chinese devotees as well as Hindus. It is busiest during the 10-day Navaratri festival in September or October, when the Vijaya Dasami procession closes Silom Road. The temple is in Bang Rak, reached from BTS Saint Louis or Chong Nonsi on the Silom Line. Entry is free; hours are Monday to Thursday 06:00-20:00, Friday 06:00-21:00 and weekends 06:00-20:30. Shoes come off at the door and photography is not allowed inside.
