Wat Aphai Thayaram (Wat Makok)
Ratchawithi Road, Thung Phaya Thai, Ratchathewi, Bangkok 10400

Wat Aphai Thayaram, known to locals as Wat Makok, is an old neighbourhood temple in Ratchathewi, a short walk north of Victory Monument. It sits on the bank of Khlong Samsen, hemmed in by a large hospital and the Victory Monument community. The temple goes back at least to the late 18th century, when it was restored after falling into disrepair, and its popular name is thought to come from the makok, or hog plum, trees that once grew on the site. Its ordination hall houses the principal Buddha image in the Mara-subduing posture and a long lacquered teak panel inscribed in Thai with the temple's history. It is a working temple used mainly for merit-making and Buddhist holiday ceremonies rather than a tourist sight. BTS Victory Monument is about a 10-minute walk away, and entry is free.
Rating from public reviews
Each part combines public reviews from several sites (249 reviews). Not our own visit.
Visitors value it as a quiet, old local temple in the middle of the busy Victory Monument area.
It is a compact working temple squeezed between a hospital and housing, so there is little to see beyond the main halls.
