Wat Dhammamongkol
132 Soi Punnawithi 20 (Sukhumvit 101), Bang Chak, Phra Khanong, Bangkok 10260
Daily 08:30-17:30

Wat Dhammamongkol is a large modern temple off Sukhumvit 101 in Bang Chak, founded in 1963 by the meditation master Luang Pho Viriyang. Its landmark is a 95-metre great chedi of 14 storeys, modelled on the tower at Bodh Gaya in India, which holds a museum of Buddhist objects, classrooms and meditation rooms, with relics enshrined at the top. Beside it, under a dome, sits a huge Buddha image carved from a single block of green jade discovered in Canada, said to be the largest jade Buddha in the world. The temple is a well-known meditation centre and runs courses and residential retreats. BTS Punnawithi is about a 10-minute walk away, and it opens daily from 08:30 to 17:30. Parts of the tower can close for renovation, so check ahead if it is your main reason to visit.
