Wat Sitaram is a small neighbourhood temple in Khlong Maha Nak, tucked down Soi Damrong Rak between the Golden Mount (Wat Saket) and Bobae Market on the edge of the old town. It was once known as Wat Khok Mu, the pigsty temple, after the pig-raising Chinese families who built it. Few tourists find their way here, so visitors often have the grounds almost to themselves while monks go about their day. The main draw is a group of large gilded Buddha images beside the ordination hall, among them a long reclining Buddha under an open-sided pavilion, which appear quite suddenly as you walk in from the lane. It suits a short, quiet detour after the Golden Mount rather than a long visit. Dress modestly with legs covered, and politely ignore strangers nearby who offer to take you shopping.

What visitors love

Visitors love finding a peaceful, almost tourist-free temple where huge gilded Buddha images appear suddenly beside the hall.

Good to know

It is small and easy to miss down a side lane, legs must be covered to enter, and one visitor was caught by a scam from strangers nearby.
